Apollo

Apollo – Versatile & Popular Choice Apollo is a flagship brand offering one of the widest ranges of campervans and motorhomes, with vehicles up to 5 years old. With options ranging from 2-berth campers to spacious 6-berth motorhomes, Apollo caters to all travel styles and budgets. Whether you prefer a compact camper or a fully self-contained motorhome, Apollo delivers flexibility and great value.

Julie's take

Apollo run one of the largest campervan fleets in New Zealand, with depots spread wide enough that pickup and drop-off logistics rarely cause headaches. They're an established brand, and it shows in the vehicles — good quality, well maintained, and young. Fleet age sits between 0 and 5 years, averaging around 2 years, so you're not likely to end up in something tired.

Where Apollo really earns its keep is the mid-premium range. Whether you're after a compact Hitop for two or a 6-berth motorhome for the extended family, they've got something that fits. The Euro Quest is our pick if you're not sure where to start — it's a 4-berth that works well for a family of four, gives couples extra room to spread out, and suits small groups who want something more compact than a full motorhome.

Pickup is straightforward. Apollo's online check-in happens before you arrive, so you're not standing at the counter filling out forms while the engine idles. They've also got a companion app with guides you can read or watch during your hire, which is handy if you hit a question on the road instead of digging through a glovebox manual.

If something does go wrong, Apollo has a 24/7 on-road care team and, being one of the bigger operators, a wide network of trusted mechanics plus enough depots that a stop-in is usually not far away. One thing to know: you need to call their toll-free line within 24 hours of an issue — 0800 788 558 within NZ, or +64 9 801 3857 (standard rates apply). Apollo won't accept claims lodged after that window, so don't sit on a problem.

Apollo suits almost anyone — solo travellers, families, groups all find something that fits in this fleet. The one group who should pay attention is budget-minded travellers: Apollo sits in the mid-premium bracket, so it's worth watching for sales rather than expecting rock-bottom rates as standard.

One more thing: if your trip covers both islands, book your Interislander or Bluebridge ferry crossing well ahead in summer, and confirm your vehicle is cleared for ferry travel before you lock in your dates.
