Jack's take

The 2 Berth Deluxe is a compact, automatic campervan with newer furnishings and a mid-premium fit-out. It sleeps two and comes with a toilet and shower — everything you need without the size of a larger motorhome. If it's your first time hiring a campervan in New Zealand, this is a strong option.

Day-to-day, it's comfortable. The key is staying organised. Pack soft luggage so you can unpack into the storage compartments and keep things off the floor. Do that, and it stays liveable well past the first week. Let it get cluttered and it'll feel small quickly.

The vehicle is certified self-contained, so you can plan free camp nights into your itinerary. Just don't stack them back-to-back. The battery generally needs recharging at a powered site every second night, so one night off-grid, one night plugged in is the rhythm that works.

When you pick up, ask the depot staff about your route. They know where the free camp spots are and can flag any unsealed roads to avoid.

The trade-off is cost and availability. The newer fit-out and premium furnishings push the daily rate higher than a basic campervan. It also books out well in advance. If you want this vehicle, book early.
