Julie's take

Kiwi Campers is aimed squarely at the budget end of the New Zealand campervan market. The fleet is mixed and often older, and condition varies quite a bit from vehicle to vehicle, so it's worth checking exactly what you're booking before you commit.

What they do well is price. If keeping the cost of your trip down is the priority, Kiwi Campers is worth a look — their range of budget campervans is one of the better ones out there.

Just go in with realistic expectations. Some vehicles are older and show normal wear and tear. Don't expect a brand-new or showroom-condition camper — you're paying for a budget option, and that's the trade-off.

Pickup is straightforward. Kiwi Campers offers free transfers from Auckland and Christchurch Airports, plus selected nearby accommodation, on both pickup and drop-off day.

If something goes wrong on the road, Kiwi Campers is backed by New Zealand Roadside Assistance (NZRA) 24-hour emergency breakdown cover and a nationwide network of service agents. We can also authorise you to spend up to $100 on emergency repairs yourself, so you can sort minor issues quickly or whenever suits you — just keep the receipt and bring it back for a refund.

Our pick from the fleet is the Kiwi Traveller 2 ST. It's one of their newer 2024/2025 vehicles, so you get a step up from the older, more basic campers while sticking with Kiwi Campers. It's also fully self-contained with a shower and toilet, which makes a real difference in comfort for two people.

We'd recommend Kiwi Campers to travellers chasing the cheapest campervan option who are happy to compromise on age, condition and comfort. If you want something newer or more comfortable, this isn't the supplier for you.

One more thing: if your trip covers both islands, book your Interislander or Bluebridge ferry crossing well ahead in summer, and confirm your vehicle is cleared for ferry travel before you lock in your dates.
