Jack's take

The Kiwi Dart 2 Berth drives like a car, not a campervan. That makes it one of the better first-time options if you're comfortable with manual transmission and want something budget to mid-range.

You get a solid bed setup that works for extended trips, plus a practical kitchen with a good fridge and two-burner stove. The storage is well thought out for the size — you won't spend day five rearranging everything. The cab heating and air con help when conditions change.

The trade-off? You're still in a compact 2-berth, so there's not much standing room and no shower. It's manual only, which rules it out if you only want automatics.

This vehicle is certified self-contained with a diesel engine that gives strong fuel efficiency for longer routes. It's a solid upgrade from a sleepervan if you want compact but comfortable.

One tip: get familiar with the power setup early. Understanding when the fridge and heating run off 12V versus 240V will make your free camping much smoother.
