The Hiway Runner is a Toyota HiAce-sized camper that sleeps 2 and seats 3. That third seat matters — if you have a friend willing to camp to help split costs, this vehicle makes that work.

It holds a green certified self-contained certificate, which is the key to free camping in New Zealand. That opens up a lot of options other vehicles can't access.

It's a smaller, more basic camper than the hi-top options on the market — and that's the trade-off. What you give up in space, you often get back on price. When availability is good, this one regularly comes up at a discount.

After day five, the size will be noticeable. Keep it tidy, use the storage properly, and treat it as an outdoor living vehicle rather than a home base. If you're spending most of your time outside, it works well. If you're planning to hunker down inside, it'll feel cramped.

First-timers who are comfortable outdoors can do fine in this van. That said, there are vehicles we'd recommend ahead of it for people who haven't hired a camper before — ask us and we'll point you in the right direction.

Before you leave the depot, check the vehicle over for any existing damage. It's standard practice with any hire vehicle, but worth doing thoroughly. While you're there, ask the staff about free camping spots along your route — they'll know what's available.
