Julie's take

Spaceships is a good fit if you want a campervan that drives and parks like a normal car. Their vehicles are compact and simple — you get the basics for sleeping and cooking, without the bulk of a larger motorhome.

The standout feature is their pick-up 24/7 system. If your flight lands late or your plans change, you can still collect your van through self-service pick-up outside normal depot hours.

Here's the trade-off: you'll be living outdoors. Cooking and daily life happen outside the vehicle, not inside it. That's great if you're out sightseeing all day and don't mind camping under the stars. It's less great if you want to retreat indoors when the weather turns.

Pick-up If you arrive within depot opening hours, the Spaceships team will walk you through the van, explain how everything works, and make sure you're comfortable before you head off. The vans are compact and simple, so handover is usually quick — but give yourself a bit of time to ask questions. Before you arrive, finish the Online Check-in Process. Log into the Check-in Portal and check every tab has a green tick.

If something goes wrong Every Spaceships van is registered with NZRA's 24-hour Roadside Assistance for mechanical faults. The key thing: contact Spaceships first and get approval before you arrange any repairs. If you don't, you risk not getting a refund for it. The Spaceships crew is there to help — call them straight away if you run into trouble.

Who it suits Spaceships is built for younger travellers who care more about the experience than the extras. Inside you get a bed, bedding, and a basic kitchenette with the essentials. It's not luxury, but it's practical — and for most trips, that's all you need.

Which van to pick Start with the Cosmo. It's Spaceships' modern take on the classic VW Kombi — the style and adventure of an old-school camper, with the comfort and tech of a modern van. It's a solid pick for anyone who wants to do New Zealand their own way.

Before you book Drivers need to be 18 or over with a valid licence. Spaceships accepts full, restricted, and legally recognised provisional licences, plus international licences with an English translation.

One more thing: if your trip covers both islands, book your Interislander or Bluebridge ferry crossing well ahead in summer, and confirm your vehicle is cleared for ferry travel before you lock in your dates.
