The Koru 3 Freedom is a budget-friendly, self-contained 3-berth campervan — a solid pick for a small family or three friends sharing the driving costs. It's economical and manual, with three front seats and a reversing camera.

One thing worth knowing before you book: you get to choose your bedding setup. The Family Setup gives you a large double plus one single, so mum and dad get the double while the kids take the single. The passenger airbag has a disable switch, which means you can safely fit a child seat right next to you. The Mates Setup converts to three separate singles — better for three adults who each want their own space.

It's been designed to stay permanently off the grid, which is exactly what you want on a New Zealand road trip. One genuinely useful feature: the hot water is heated automatically while you drive, using a heat exchanger. It stays hot for up to 24 hours, so you're not burning gas just to shower. The vehicle also has an anti-theft security system, handy when you're leaving it parked up to go hiking.

The trade-off is space. Three adults living in this van will start to feel it after a few days. Keep on top of the storage and stay organised — that's what makes it work long-term. The manual gearbox is also worth flagging. It's not a problem if you're used to it, but if you're not confident with a manual, factor that in before you book.
